SHILLONG: A chilling threat has gripped Tura and surrounding areas after a poster, purportedly issued by the global terror outfit ISIS-K, surfaced on Wednesday morning, warning the Garo community to vacate West Garo Hills by 2027, triggering panic across the region.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, said the investigation is ongoing and the State Government is prepared to seek assistance from Central agencies if required.
“The investigation is underway. At this stage, it is too early to comment on whether opportunistic elements are involved. If necessary, the State Government will seek help from Central agencies,” Tynsong said.
The poster was reportedly found pasted on an electric pole at New Tura Matchokolgre, near the Law College at Araimile in West Garo Hills. Titled “Warning to Garos,” the poster ordered members of the Garo community to vacate areas including Tura, Phulbari, Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Selsella, and Garobadha, claiming these regions as “their territory.”
The poster further threatened that residents must leave the areas by 2027 if they valued their lives.
The name Aminur Islam, identifying himself as a “Plain Belt Area Commander,” appears on the poster.
Assuring the public that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness, Tynsong urged citizens to remain calm while authorities pursue the culprits.
Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma confirmed that the poster has been seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. A formal case has been registered at the Araimile Police Station.
Police rushed to the location immediately after the poster surfaced on social media and conducted a thorough search of the area.
Security Measures Intensified
-
Intelligence Assessment: Police suspect the act may be the work of miscreants attempting to disturb communal harmony rather than a confirmed terror module.
-
Border Vigil: Security has been heightened along the Assam and Bangladesh borders.
-
Enhanced Patrols: Night patrolling has been intensified in Tura and surrounding areas, despite the absence of CCTV coverage near the Law College.
The SP clarified that no other such posters have been found elsewhere in the district so far and cautioned the public against spreading or reacting to unverified or fake content on social media intended to incite communal tension.
Citizens are urged to report any suspicious activity immediately to: +91 8837423053, +91 7005530510 and +91 9089199064.
