SHILLONG: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has issued a strong challenge to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), asserting that the time has come for a change in leadership.
Speaking on the party’s approach to the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said the party will not rush into electoral contests without a clear and well-thought-out strategy. He stressed that the VPP’s primary objective is to ensure clean and accountable governance rather than merely contesting elections for short-term gains.
“Our focus is on making decisions that are in the best interest of the people of Meghalaya. We are not here just to contest elections, but to bring about meaningful change,” Myrboh said.
While the GHADC elections remain under discussion, the VPP is strategically focusing on the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections as its long-term goal.
Launching a sharp attack on the ruling dispensation, Myrboh declared, “It is time for the NPP to go,” signalling the party’s intent to challenge the existing power structure and present itself as a credible alternative to the electorate.
Outlining the party’s roadmap, Myrboh said the VPP’s leadership has begun strengthening its organisational base across the state. He pointed to the party president’s recent visit to the Garo Hills as a key effort to assess ground realities and expand the party’s reach beyond its traditional strongholds.
He expressed confidence that the VPP’s emphasis on systemic reform and transparent governance would resonate with voters, adding that the party aims to emerge as a major political force capable of leading the state government by 2028.
With the VPP sharpening its strategy ahead of the next Assembly elections, political observers believe Meghalaya is heading towards an increasingly competitive and closely watched political contest.
