TURA: Amid heightened tensions in the Garo Hills region, West Garo Hills Police seized a cache of weapons during a routine naka checking operation at Aramile, as part of intensified efforts to prevent violence and maintain law and order.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Abraham T. Sangma confirmed that the operation was carried out on the evening of March 16.
During the vehicle checks, police recovered several potentially dangerous items, including machetes (Waitlam), hammers (Tyrnem) and catapults (Jri).
Authorities suspect that these items may have been intended for use in inciting communal or ethnic unrest, given the prevailing sensitive situation in the region.
All occupants of the intercepted vehicles were taken into custody for questioning. During preliminary interrogation, the suspects reportedly stated that they were heading towards the ‘Plain Belt’ areas.
They also alleged that their movement was triggered by provocation linked to an organisation identified as ACHIK. Police are currently verifying these claims and probing whether there is a larger conspiracy or coordinated attempt to trigger unrest.
Following the seizure, security measures have been significantly stepped up across West Garo Hills. Police have increased patrolling and set up additional checkpoints in identified “flashpoint” areas.
Officials have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities to help maintain peace and stability in the district.
