KHLIEHRIAT: Police in East Jaintia Hills have intensified their crackdown on illegal coal mining following the fatal explosion at an illegal mining site in Thangsko, with two more mine owners arrested in connection with the case.
Officials on Wednesday confirmed that the latest arrests — Process Dkhar, also known as Prakash, a resident of Sutnga and Tensing Suchiang, is a resident of Umlawang village.
These arrests come after the earlier detention of two other suspects — Forme Chyrmang (36) – Resident of Jalaphet Pordung village and Shamehi War (42) – Resident of Sutnga Pohwailong village
According to East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of PoliceVikash Kumar, Chyrmang and War have already been produced before the court and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
The deadly blast at Thangsko has triggered widespread public outrage and renewed scrutiny of illegal coal mining in the district, despite long-standing bans and court directives.

A senior police official said authorities are determined to dismantle the entire network operating behind such illegal mines.
“We are tightening the noose on those working behind the scenes. Our objective is to identify every individual involved in running these dangerous operations,” the official stated.
Police confirmed that the investigation remains active, with efforts underway to trace additional collaborators and ensure strict enforcement of safety and mining regulations across East Jaintia Hills.
Officials said further arrests cannot be ruled out as more evidence is examined and financial and logistical links are verified.
