SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) General Secretary Titoswell Chyne clarified that the party has not received any official communication regarding speculation that some UDP MLAs may switch allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Chyne said current reports remain unverified and are based solely on media speculation.

Addressing the ongoing rumors, Chyne acknowledged that individual grievances among party MLAs may have surfaced following the recent ministerial reshuffle but stressed that such political shifts are not new in Meghalaya’s history.

He expressed regret over the long-standing trend of regional party divisions, warning that another split to join a national party would be especially unfortunate for the state’s indigenous communities.

Chyne revealed that UDP leadership has spoken directly with the MLAs rumored to be considering defection, but the lawmakers neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

He made an open appeal: if any dissatisfaction with UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh or himself as General Secretary is the cause, both leaders are willing to step down in the interest of party unity.

Chyne emphasized that UDP’s leadership roles are not personal positions and affirmed a commitment to the party’s unity and the protection of indigenous identity.
