SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s political scene is set for a major shake-up as former Nongthymmai MLA Jemino Mawthoh, who recently resigned from the United Democratic Party (UDP), is expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) later this month.
The move, anticipated as a high-profile boost for the BJP’s regional growth, comes amid intense speculation that up to nine UDP legislators may also be considering a switch to the saffron party.
While neither Mawthoh nor the BJP has formally announced the date of his induction, party insiders suggest plans are being finalized.

The possible influx of UDP MLAs would significantly alter the balance of power in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, where the BJP currently holds just two seats—represented by AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai.
Despite securing around nine percent of the vote in the 2023 elections, the BJP has struggled to expand its presence in Meghalaya.
By attracting established regional leaders like Mawthoh and potentially others, the party aims to strengthen its base and increase its influence ahead of future polls.
