‘UDP never truly deserved Bah Paul Lyngdoh’

“The UDP never truly deserved Bah Paul Lyngdoh,” he stated, highlighting his sense of being undervalued by the party.

SHILLONG: In a major political development, three United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs, including senior leader Paul Lyngdoh (West Shillong), Renikton L. Tongkhar (Mawkyrwat), and Nujorki Sungoh (Mookaiaw), have formally submitted their resignation from the UDP and announced their merger with the National People’s Party (NPP).

The move was made official in a letter to Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Paul Lyngdoh, addressing the media, explained that internal conflicts and lack of recognition within the UDP drove the decision.

He recounted that, even as the party tasked him and others with revitalizing the UDP in Shillong, secret efforts were underway to remove him and Kyrmen Shylla from leadership.

Lyngdoh emphasized that mass defections do not happen without reason, citing the party’s failure to address critical restructuring issues and its lack of clear leadership direction.

He declared that the NPP offered a more systematic, respectful platform, and stressed there were no preconditions for the merger—only the desire for mutual respect.

“The UDP never truly deserved Bah Paul Lyngdoh,” he stated, highlighting his sense of being undervalued by the party.
