SHILLONG: Unidentified burglars allegedly broke into the offices of the Revenue, Budget and Finance Department of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in the early hours of Monday and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to officials, the burglary is believed to have occurred around 6 am but went unnoticed until approximately 11 am, when employees arrived for work and discovered documents and files scattered across the floor. Several drawers and almirahs showed clear signs of forced entry.

Authorities are currently verifying whether any important documents are missing. The exact amount of cash stolen is yet to be ascertained.

An FIR has been lodged at Lumdiengjri Police Station, and police teams visited the KHADC premises on Tuesday to conduct a detailed investigation.

KHADC Executive Member in charge of the Elaka Department, Denzil Raynard Chen, said CCTV footage captured two individuals entering the building around 6 am. One suspect reportedly moved upstairs while the other headed downstairs. One of the intruders was seen wearing a mask, while the other had covered his head.

He added that several almirahs were found damaged, and a sweater along with a bag was recovered near a window, suggesting that the suspects may have entered through a skylight. The break-in remained undetected for several hours until staff reported for duty.

Police have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects and are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to trace their movements.
