SHILLONG: Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has called for full accountability from the Meghalaya government and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong in the wake of the Khasi Students’ Union’s (KSU) exposure of illegal monetary collections by police along the Mawkhanu and Thangshalai highways.
Basaiawmoit criticized the government’s response as inadequate, arguing that suspending low-ranking constables and transferring the Officer-in-Charge does not address the systemic problem.
Basaiawmoit insisted that higher authorities, including the Home Minister, must take moral and administrative responsibility for failing to curb highway extortion, which he said damages the dignity of the state’s indigenous society.
He argued that scapegoating junior officers while shielding top officials undermines true accountability.
The controversy erupted after a KSU delegation caught police personnel red-handed extorting money from vehicles during a surprise inspection on September 30.
The VPP has demanded more comprehensive action from the government, warning that temporary punishments of lower-level personnel are insufficient to resolve the deep-rooted issue.
