SHILLONG: Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, the president of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), has expressed deep concern over the threats facing the culture, traditions, and indigenous rights of the people in the Garo Hills region.
Basaiawmoit affirmed that the VPP stands in total solidarity with the Garo community in their struggle to protect their ancestral customs and way of life.
The VPP leader has condemned the MDA government for its perceived negligence, which he claims led to the current unrest. He argued that these complications could have been avoided had the government taken proactive and appropriate measures.
Basaiawmoit recalled raising this specific issue within the State Assembly, where he questioned the government’s stance.
At the time, the government had suggested it could not prevent non-tribals from contesting the MDC (Member of District Council) elections.
“I had previously warned that this would lead to major complications. What we are seeing today is a direct result of non-tribals feeling emboldened by the government’s rhetoric to enter and contest the MDC elections,” Bah Ardent stated.
Reflecting on the history of the Sixth Schedule, the VPP leader pointed out that these special constitutional protections were not a “gift” from the Government of India. Instead, they were the hard-won result of the sacrifices and rigorous debates led by visionary forefathers in the Constituent Assembly.
He added that while the Sixth Schedule exists specifically to safeguard the rights of indigenous tribes in hill areas, the current leadership appears to lack the accountability and will to uphold these protections for the welfare of the people.
A Call for Peace
While urging the public to stand up for their rights, Basaiawmoit cautioned against any actions that might disrupt peace and stability.
He appealed to the people of Garo Hills to shun any form of unrest.
He noted that resorting to force would only provide an advantage to those opposing the indigenous cause.
He encouraged the community to pursue their struggle through peaceful and democratic channels.
The VPP chief reaffirmed that the party remains committed to supporting the protection of indigenous rights across the entire state of Meghalaya.
