SHILLONG: Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has clarified that North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum remains a legislator, despite being suspended from the party for three years.
Nongrum’s suspension—effective retroactively from February 24, 2025—was announced on March 28 and stems from actions and statements deemed contrary to VPP discipline and regulations.
The disciplinary action follows mounting grievances, including Nongrum’s public criticism of VPP leadership after his recommended candidates were sidelined for the Autonomous District Council elections and disagreements over party decisions regarding the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
Tensions escalated after the party found Nongrum’s response to a show-cause notice unsatisfactory.
While Nongrum continues to serve as an MLA, he is barred from representing the VPP at public events or official functions for the duration of his suspension.
