SHILLONG: BJP leader and MLA A.L. Hek has projected a BJP-led government in Meghalaya by 2028, signaling a major strategic push within the state’s ruling coalition.
Following a high-level meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, Hek emphasized the BJP’s commitment to fulfilling core regional demands, including the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and fast-tracking the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Hek stated that while ongoing discussions among United Democratic Party (UDP) and National People’s Party (NPP) legislators are internal matters, the BJP is steadfast in supporting genuine public demands to ensure long-term stability and regional interests.

He noted that Amit Shah reaffirmed the party’s readiness to back these priorities.
Addressing speculation about cabinet reshuffles or potential party switches, Hek maintained that such decisions rest with the BJP’s national leadership and that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma retains authority over cabinet appointments.
Hek affirmed that alliance partners would respect the Chief Minister’s prerogatives.
Looking ahead, Hek announced that Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Meghalaya soon, signaling an intensified phase of political engagement as the BJP lays groundwork for the 2028 assembly elections.
