Cannabis Cultivation at Sohiong

SHILLONG: In a major crackdown on illicit drug cultivation, the East Khasi Hills District Police, in coordination with the district administration, Forest Department, Excise Department, and the State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), successfully destroyed approximately 10 tonnes of illegally cultivated cannabis (ganja) spread across 5 hectares of land at Laitlulong in Sohiong on Monday.

The joint team systematically uprooted and cut down the cannabis plants from the entire cultivation area before conducting a controlled burning of the seized contraband on-site, in accordance with established safety and legal protocols.

According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, this coordinated operation highlights the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics-related activities and reflects the commitment of multiple departments to safeguard communities from the growing threat of drug abuse and trafficking.

Authorities further reiterated that cultivation of cannabis is a punishable offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in such illegal activities.

This operation marks a strong message of deterrence and reinforces the state’s resolve to curb the cultivation and distribution of narcotic substances in Meghalaya, SP Syiem said.
