SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday urged Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar to take up with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) the long-pending demand for establishing a permanent zonal office of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Shillong to combat the growing drug menace in the state.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the Governor, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem expressed concern over Meghalaya increasingly becoming both a transit route and a destination for drug consumption, with particularly serious impacts in Shillong.
Synrem emphasized that while rehabilitation of drug addicts remains important, the priority must be on preventing the inflow and supply of narcotics into the state.

Reiterating the council’s demand, he said that a permanent NCB zonal office in Shillong would enhance coordination between the NCB, Meghalaya Police, Customs, and other enforcement agencies, thereby strengthening efforts to curb drug trafficking.
The HYC also highlighted that Meghalaya’s proximity to the Golden Triangle has made the state especially vulnerable to drug trafficking networks.
According to Synrem, Governor Vijayashankar assured the delegation that he would raise the issue with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
