SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya has confirmed that it is maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma, regarding his potential entry into the party.
Senior BJP leader and MLA, Alexander Laloo Hek, disclosed that while the party has extended a formal invitation, Dr. Sangma has neither accepted nor rejected the proposal at this stage.
Instead, the veteran leader has requested more time to carefully deliberate on what would be a significant milestone in his political career. The BJP has agreed to grant him the necessary time for consideration, with Hek noting that the party remains prepared to follow up at an appropriate moment.
Furthermore, Hek revealed that the BJP’s expansion efforts extend beyond the former Chief Minister. He claimed that at least four other sitting MLAs from both regional and national parties are currently in discussions with the BJP.
These talks are centred around a strategic move to join the saffron party ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Hek clarified that the BJP has opened its doors to all leaders who share a common vision for the development and progress of Meghalaya. He also emphasized that the party has its own “masterminds” and strategists within the state, drawing a parallel to the successful organizational models used in Assam, to strengthen the party’s foundation for a decisive victory in future polls.
A move by Dr. Mukul Sangma, a towering political figure from the Garo Hills, to join the BJP would likely trigger a massive shift in Meghalaya’s political landscape. However, Dr. Sangma is reportedly weighing multiple options simultaneously.
Alongside the BJP’s offer, he is said to be considering a possible return to the Indian National Congress or the alternative of launching a new regional political outfit to further his vision for the state.
