SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has supported a stringent verification process during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and strongly opposed any attempt by illegal immigrants to misuse Khasi surnames to secure inclusion in the voters’ list.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne was responding to concerns raised by the FKJGP and KSU regarding alleged cases of suspected Bangladeshi nationals adopting Khasi surnames in villages along the international border.
Chyne said the party has already urged the authorities to involve Rangbah Shnongs and traditional institutions in the verification process to ascertain the indigenous status of residents during the revision exercise.
He informed that the UDP would also appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to closely monitor the process and assist election officials in ensuring the integrity of the electoral rolls.
While acknowledging concerns over the presence of doubtful citizens in border areas, Chyne expressed confidence in the Election Commission’s verification mechanisms. He said that if all prescribed guidelines are strictly followed, ineligible voters would be identified and removed from the electoral rolls.
Reiterating the party’s stand, Chyne asserted that the UDP would strongly oppose any illegal immigrant attempting to misuse Khasi surnames or falsely claim Scheduled Tribe status to gain electoral benefits.
