SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has voiced serious concern over the prevailing administrative situation at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), alleging prolonged absence and continued interference by the Vice-Chancellor (VC).
Addressing Media, NEHUTA president Prof.Lakhon Kma stated that the Vice-Chancellor has remained away from the university headquarters for over 540 days, which, according to the association, has adversely impacted the institution’s functioning. He alleged that despite the prolonged absence, the VC continues to intervene in day-to-day administrative matters, resulting in what he described as a “policy paralysis.”
Kma highlighted that several critical issues remain unresolved, including the confirmation of teachers appointed in 2023. He noted that although meetings of the Executive Council were reportedly held in recent months, no clarity has emerged as the minutes of these meetings have not been shared.
The NEHUTA president further pointed to financial constraints within the university, citing delays in the clearance of bills and an overall lack of administrative direction. He said these developments have raised concerns among stakeholders regarding the future of the institution.
Expressing hope for improvement, Kma said the association expects the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor after the current tenure end on July 25, 2026, and called for leadership committed to restoring stability and strengthening the university.
