SHILLONG: Emerging from over two months behind bars, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) President Raymond Kharjana and General Secretary Reuben A Najiar walked out of the Shillong District Jail this evening, greeted by a sea of cheering supporters.
Their release marks a dramatic turning point following their high-profile arrest on August 19, 2026, which stemmed from violent clashes during a contentious black flag bike rally.
Rather than signaling a retreat, the leaders’ freedom was met with a defiant show of solidarity.
Following their formal release proceedings, the duo was escorted from the Shillong District Jail to Motphran, where hundreds of union members had gathered.
Transforming the moment into a triumphant procession, supporters marched alongside the leaders on foot all the way to the KSU central office amidst a charged, celebratory atmosphere.
Addressing reporters outside, President Kharjana deflected any narrative of defeat, framing their incarceration not as a setback, but as a crucible that hardened the union’s resolve.
Expressing deep appreciation for the unwavering backing of both current and veteran members through their detention, Kharjana declared that time behind bars serves as a vital training ground for indigenous rights advocacy.
He pointed out that government movement on several key demands has already begun to show progress while they were locked away.
Looking to the immediate future, Kharjana announced that the union’s Central Executive Council (CEC) will convene imminently to map out strategic next steps, ensuring the state administration fully delivers on the remaining agenda.
Dismissing recent attempts by critics to cast shadow on the union’s reputation, he maintained that such maneuvers are entirely impotent against collective resolve.
Asked about the legal finer points of their exit, Kharjana shrugged off the technicalities, stating he hadn’t bothered to review the case files or bail conditions, leaving the legal battlefield completely in the hands of the KSU’s dedicated legal team.
