A Legacy of Kindness: ‘U Rupang’ Spreads Christmas Cheer to Underprivileged Families

The Shlem’s ultimate goal remains firm: to ensure that no home in Khasi-Jaintia Hills is left without a reason to smile.

SHILLONG: In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Khasi daily newspaper U Rupang continued its 14-year-old tradition of bringing hope to the less fortunate.

The “Shlem Jingïarap ïa kiba Duk”, an initiative started by the publication, held its annual gift-giving program today at the Mawkhar Christian Higher Secondary School premises.

What began in 2011 as a small spark of empathy has now grown into a steady flame of support for the community. The initiative was born after the U Rupang team noticed a stark contrast during the festive season: while many celebrated with new clothes and grand feasts, several families remained in the shadows of poverty, unable to join the festivities.

Determined to bridge this gap, the Shlem was established to collect contributions from generous donors and redirect them to those most in need across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

This year, the initiative reached a new milestone. Through the collective generosity of well-wishers, a total of Rs 65,500 was raised. This enabled the Shlem to support 10 selected families with kits containing daily necessities to ease their household burdens during the winter.

To ensure the aid reaches the “poorest of the poor,” the selection process is handled with extreme care. The Shlem jingiarap ia ki ba duk, collaborates with the Social Welfare department, local church bodies, and its own dedicated field team to identify families who are truly struggling.

From Small Beginnings to Grand Visions
The growth of the program has been inspiring. At its inception, the “Shlem jingiarap ki ba duk “could only support three families. Today, that number has more than tripled, reflecting the growing trust and spirit of giving in the region.

The event was graced by several prominent figures, including, R.M. Shabong (Chairman of the Shlem jingiarap kiba duk u Rupang) Babu Kular (Secretary),Lamphrang Kharbani (President of HANM),Pastor Emlang Saphuh, Sahimika Khyriem and others.

As the families received their gifts, the atmosphere was filled with gratitude. The Shlem’s ultimate goal remains firm: to ensure that no home in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills is left without a reason to smile as they bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.
