SHILLONG: The All Khasi Hills A’chik Joint Action Committee has urged Meghalaya’s Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed to allow the use of the Garo language in recruitment processes conducted by District Selection Committees (DSCs) across the state.
General Secretary John Sangma said the Chief Secretary acknowledged the issue and advised the delegation to meet Isawanda Laloo, IAS, who oversees DSCs.
After meeting Laloo, who expressed hope that the matter could be resolved, the committee reiterated that both Khasi and Garo—now official languages of Meghalaya—should be used in recruitment in all districts, not just in the Garo Hills.

Sangma emphasized equality for both communities and stated, “We have no objection if Khasi is used in the Garo Hills. We want both languages to be used in all districts.”
The committee has been holding public meetings to mobilize support and plans to visit Garo-inhabited villages in the Khasi Hills before meeting Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to further press their demand.
Sangma also raised concerns over alleged discrimination faced by Garo residents in the Khasi Hills and said the committee would seek support from MLAs representing both regions.
