Basaiawmoit Slams Border Pact as “Land Sellout”

The VPP president called for solutions and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to advocate for the rights and interests of border communities.

SHILLONG: Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has strongly condemned the Meghalaya-Assam border settlement agreement, asserting that it amounts to “selling out” indigenous land rather than achieving a true border resolution.

Speaking amid ongoing tensions and instability in border areas, Basaiawmoit reiterated the VPP’s steadfast opposition to the deal, emphasizing that the party will never accept the current demarcation.

Basaiawmoit highlighted his efforts to bring the concerns of border residents to the forefront during a recent Special Motion in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, noting the severe hardships faced by those living in vulnerable regions.

He assured residents of the VPP’s unwavering support but acknowledged that, in some cases, the party’s ability to reverse certain state-level decisions is limited.

The VPP president called for genuine solutions and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to advocate for the rights and interests of border communities.
