SHILLONG: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma has expressed optimism that the new Assembly building will be ready for inauguration by mid-November, with the next session likely to be held in the state-of-the-art facility.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the construction site, Sangma said work progress was satisfactory and the official completion deadline remains October 31.

While additional requirements related to ICT, IT infrastructure, and security have been added to the original Detailed Project Report (DPR), Sangma clarified there has been no escalation in the sanctioned project cost.

He noted that the agency has been given until October 31 to complete the construction, with hopes the project will be finished within the current financial year.

Regarding the project’s second phase, Sangma said the sanction process was pending due to changes in formats and guidelines, and suggested seeking guidance from the Parliament Speaker’s Office on the appropriate department for approvals.

Asked if the upcoming Assembly session could take place in the new building, Sangma replied, “Hopefully, yes.”
