SHILLONG: Former United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and ex-Nongthymmai MLA Dr. Jemino Mawthoh has announced he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with his supporters on September 12, 2026.
Confirming recent reports, Dr. Mawthoh said the decision came after extensive consultations with his supporters over the past 15 months since leaving the UDP.
Mawthoh explained that, after leaving the UDP, he and his group had not immediately decided on their next political move.

Regular discussions with BJP leaders, as well as internal consultations, led to the collective decision to formally join the party.
Mawthoh noted that his previous attempts to unite regional parties had not materialized, and cited the current political climate in Meghalaya as a reason for charting a new course.
He emphasized that the move to join the BJP was made in the interest of the indigenous community and the state of Meghalaya.
