SHILLONG: In a significant move aimed at clearing the air over political speculation in Meghalaya, State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rikman G. Momin on Wednesday firmly ruled out any attempts by his party to pull legislators from its ruling ally, the National People’s Party (NPP).
Momin asserted that the saffron party has no intentions of breaking the alliance or encouraging ruling party MLAs to defect, emphasizing that any move to destabilize the present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government would be highly unethical.
The clear stance from the state party chief comes at a time when political circles have been abuzz with rumors of a potential realignment of forces ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Dismissing these rumors, Momin clarified that the BJP values its partnership within the MDA and is committed to maintaining the stability of the coalition government.
Adding to his clarification, the state BJP president also addressed speculation regarding opposition lawmakers, explicitly stating that no legislators from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are currently in contact with the BJP. This statement appears to cool down intense rumors that opposition members were looking to switch sides to join the ruling camp.
The categorical denial from the party chief marks a notable shift in tone from earlier assertions made by the state BJP leadership. Previously, certain party insiders and leaders had claimed that several sitting legislators from various political outfits were actively in touch with the BJP high command and were likely to jump ship ahead of the next assembly polls.
By dismissing these claims, Momin has sought to reassure the NPP leadership and reinforce the ethical boundaries of their ongoing political partnership in the state.
