Robertjune Kharjahrin Resigns from UDP over James’ Candidature for RS Polls

The UDP leader Robert Kharjahrin cited an irreconcilable conflict of conscience regarding the party's current direction.

SHILLONG: In a major political development in Meghalaya, former Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) candidate Robertjune Kharjahrin, who unsuccessfully contested the Shillong Lok Sabha parliamentary seat during the 2024 MP elections, has resigned from the United Democratic Party (UDP).

Kharjahrin formally submitted his resignation today to the President and General Secretary of the UDP Central Executive Committee, completely cutting ties by quitting both his position as Vice President and his primary membership with immediate effect.

Kharjahrin stated that he stepped down with a heavy heart and a deep sense of disappointment, citing an irreconcilable conflict of conscience regarding the party’s current direction.

He pointed directly to a recent, controversial move by UDP legislators to back National People’s Party (NPP) candidate James PK Sangma for the Rajya Sabha election.

According to Kharjahrin, this decision was made without the mandate of the UDP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), leaving him deeply disturbed.

In his resignation notice, the leader lambasted the decision as “hypocritical and politically opportunistic”.

He questioned how the UDP could actively contest against the NPP in the ongoing bye-election to the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency, appealing to voters with an alternative political vision, while simultaneously helping an NPP candidate secure a seat in the Rajya Sabha.

Kharjahrin argued that such mixed signals undermine the party’s credibility, weaken public trust in democratic institutions, and completely erode its moral authority before the people of Meghalaya who deserve honesty and clarity.

Reaffirming his commitment to a public life built on principles and consistency, Kharjahrin expressed that remaining silent on an issue of such significance was impossible for him.

While thanking all party workers, supporters, and well-wishers for their companionship throughout his political journey, he concluded by asserting that he will continue to serve the citizens of Meghalaya and champion causes that serve the state’s best interests.
