SHILLONG: The President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and former Member of Parliament, Vincent H. Pala, disclosed today that he is currently considering contesting the upcoming bye-election for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.

Pala stated that the Congress party expects to finalize its decision regarding the official candidate by May 15, 2026.

The Shillong Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the sudden demise of the sitting Voice of the People Party (VPP) MP, Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon, on February 19. It may be recalled that Pala secured the second position behind Dr. Syngkon during the general Lok Sabha elections held in 2024.

Speaking to media persons, Pala explained that given the current shortage of candidates within the party, he may have to step into the fray himself. However, he emphasized that the party is awaiting a formal meeting to reach a definitive conclusion.

He revealed that a recent meeting resulted in a recommendation sent to Delhi suggesting his candidacy. Despite this, Pala believes it is essential to gather feedback from all Blocks and Districts rather than relying on the opinions of a few individuals.

The final decision-making meeting is expected to take place after May 10. While his name has already been proposed to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Delhi in the first instance, Pala has requested more time from the party to consult with his family members and close friends before making a final commitment.

He further noted that while many Congress leaders are eager for him to contest again, he remains open to other candidates who might wish to stand for the election. He urged everyone to look forward to the best outcome for the party in the upcoming deliberations.
