SHILLONG: Amid speculation that nine United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), senior BJP leader and National Executive member A.L. Hek clarified that while the party remains open to inducting leaders from all backgrounds, any final decision rests with the BJP’s central leadership.

Hek emphasized that the state unit has no authority over high-level inductions or political negotiations. “Our doors are open to anyone—sitting or former MLAs—but all major decisions are handled by the national leadership,” he said.

Hek dismissed rumors of his own involvement in ongoing talks, stating he has no current plans to travel to Delhi or Guwahati.

The rumors of a potential crossover come as the BJP gains traction in Meghalaya ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

Hek projected confidence in the party’s future, stating, “In 2028, it will be a BJP-led government in Meghalaya.”

If nine UDP MLAs do switch sides, it could significantly weaken the UDP’s legislative strength and alter the balance of Meghalaya’s ruling coalition, potentially boosting BJP’s position in state politics.

However, the timing and scale of any such political shift remain unconfirmed.
