SHILLONG: A book chronicling the life, political legacy, and legislative contributions of former Meghalaya Chief Minister (L) B.B. Lyngdoh was released at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The event, attended by Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma, honored the veteran leader known as the father of coalition politics in Meghalaya.
Speaker Sangma highlighted Lyngdoh’s pivotal role in the state’s political evolution, consensus-building, and advocacy for land reforms and the introduction of the Local Area Development Scheme (now the MLA scheme).
He praised Lyngdoh’s vision of a modern, prosperous Meghalaya rooted in tradition and identity, emphasizing that the book would serve as a valuable resource for students, scholars, and future legislators.
Syrpailin Khonglah, Lyngdoh’s daughter, described the book as a comprehensive record drawn from over three decades of Assembly proceedings, encompassing debates, questions, and replies involving many prominent leaders.
She recalled Lyngdoh’s focus on development, healthcare, education, and road connectivity as fundamental priorities and his instrumental role in the establishment of NEIGRIHMS.
Author Dr. Andrew Simons noted that Lyngdoh’s contributions to Meghalaya’s statehood, coalition politics, and institution-building spanned from 1970 until his passing.
Simons described Lyngdoh as a humble yet decisive leader whose legacy continues to offer important lessons in public service and responsible governance.
