SHILLONG: Facing mounting pressure from livestock disease outbreaks and falling crop prices, the Hill Farmers Union (HFU) has urged the Meghalaya government to fast-track a dedicated state agricultural policy and strengthen border security for incoming livestock.
HFU President Commander Shangpliang led a delegation to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, presenting urgent demands including loan waivers, direct compensation for pig farmers, and the establishment of border check posts and quarantine facilities to prevent imported infections.
Shangpliang highlighted the devastation caused by unchecked movement of livestock, which has spread disease and left local farmers with heavy losses and debt.

The HFU called for immediate compensation and full loan waivers for affected families.
Chief Minister Sangma assured the delegation that the government would work with the Veterinary Department to set up health monitoring at entry points, but said compensation procedures are still under review.
He also addressed concerns over plummeting prices for cabbage and chayote (biskot), announcing that a comprehensive draft Agricultural Policy will be launched this year and encouraging farmers to provide feedback to shape the final policy for greater market stability and farmer welfare.
