SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Santanu Thakur on Friday reiterated the Government of India’s commitment to granting citizenship to eligible religious minorities who migrated from Bangladesh due to religious persecution.
Addressing the media in Shillong, Thakur said that under the provisions introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, individuals who entered India before December 31, 2014, and meet the prescribed eligibility criteria are entitled to apply for Indian citizenship.
Commenting on recent reports of people allegedly being pushed into Indian territory from Bangladesh, the Union Minister termed the development unfortunate. He said minority communities, including Hindus living in Bangladesh, have the right to reside safely in their own country and should not be forced to cross international borders. He added that the Government of India would take up the matter with the Bangladesh authorities to prevent such incidents and ensure the protection of their citizens.
On political developments in Meghalaya, Thakur said decisions regarding the induction of leaders into the BJP are taken collectively by the party leadership. While refraining from commenting on any specific individual, he maintained that such decisions would be made at the appropriate party level.
The Minister also stressed the Centre’s commitment to strengthening security along the India-Bangladesh border through the completion of border fencing. He acknowledged that progress has faced challenges in certain stretches due to local objections and logistical issues, particularly in areas close to the international boundary. However, he expressed confidence that the Ministry of Home Affairs would continue efforts to address these challenges and improve border management.
Speaking on the BJP’s prospects in Meghalaya, Thakur expressed optimism about the party’s growing presence in the state. He said BJP workers have been actively engaging with the public and highlighting the achievements of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, while geographical constraints in the North-East have sometimes slowed the dissemination of information, awareness of the Centre’s development initiatives is steadily increasing.
Highlighting the achievements of the NDA government over the past 12 years, Thakur said the Prime Minister has consistently prioritised the development of the North-East. He claimed that significant progress has been made in infrastructure, connectivity and welfare sectors, creating new opportunities for the people of the region.
He added that the BJP remains committed to addressing public concerns, ensuring the effective implementation of government schemes and working towards the overall development of Meghalaya and the North-East.
