SHILLONG: In light of growing tension along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border, particularly in Lapangap Village, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has submitted a memorandum to the state government urging immediate intervention to ensure the safety and security of residents during the ongoing paddy harvesting season.

Speaking to the media after the meeting with the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday, Waheh Shnong of Lapangap Deimonmi Lyngdoh expressed deep concern over recent incidents that have created a sense of fear and insecurity among villagers living near the disputed border. he stressed that the situation has become increasingly volatile, and called for the urgent deployment of additional police and security forces in the area to prevent any unlawful activities or intrusion from across the border.

Lyngdoh further said that maintaining law and order during this critical period is very important, as the residents of Lapangap rely heavily on the current harvest for their annual sustenance. He requested the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to be stationed and patrol and surveillance be carried out to ensure a peaceful environment in the village. He also emphasized that residents must be allowed to carry out their agricultural activities without disruption or fear.

He also highlighted the need to reinforce the existing security apparatus with not just non-lethal equipment such as lathis, but also with adequate defensive arms, communication tools, and transportation as per standard paramilitary and police norms. A stronger and more visible security presence, they argued, would help deter potential conflict, prevent civilians from resorting to retaliatory action, and ensure a peaceful harvesting period.

He also informed that the Chief Minister had assured the villagers security. He also assured them that he will speak with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and urged them to give time and days for the farmer so that the farmer from Meghallaya would be able to harvest the paddy peacefully.
