SHILLONG: Three people, including a three-and-a-half-year-old child, were injured in a major road accident near Meika Shop in Mawlai Iewrynghep on Tuesday morning after a Bolero Pick-up vehicle allegedly suffered brake failure and crashed into oncoming traffic.
According to Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the incident occurred around 8:15 AM when the Bolero Pick-up (ML06-8554), driven by 45-year-old Barstone Shabong of Laitlyngkot, Pynursla, was heading toward Mawlai Motsyiar. The driver reported a mechanical failure in the braking system, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
The Pick-up veered sharply to the extreme left, striking two scooters in the opposite lane before colliding with two other four-wheelers.
The injured have been identified as Smti Mercy D. Sangma (35) and her young child, Master Rikdora D. Sangma (3½ years), both residents of the 1st MLP Battalion, who were riding on one scooter (ML05AE3057).
The second scooter’s rider, 25-year-old Gilbert Pakynteiñ of Mawiong (ML05AB9130), also sustained injuries.
All three victims were immediately rushed by local commuters to Robert Hospital in Shillong, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The collision also damaged two other vehicles: a Hyundai Venue (ML05AB7973) driven by Batphang Blein of Mawiong Umjapung, and another vehicle (AP39MM6336) driven by Koteswara Rao.
Both drivers declined to pursue legal action due to minor damages and left the scene after initial enquiries.
Police have seized the Bolero Pick-up, and the driver, Barstone Shabong, was sent for a medical examination, which confirmed no presence of alcohol.
A formal requisition has been placed for a mechanical inspection to verify the claim of brake failure.
Meanwhile, the Investigating Officer has registered a suo motu FIR under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash and negligent driving and endangering life, along with Sections 184 and 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
