SHILLONG: In a bold and visionary move to transform Meghalaya into a premier global travel destination, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has issued a rallying cry for the state to act as “one family” to capture the world’s imagination.
Speaking at the breathtaking Orchid Lake in Umiam on May 6, 2026, the Chief Minister headlined the ‘Tourism Champion’ awards—a high-energy event organized by the Tourism Department that united entrepreneurs, students, traditional village leaders, and local beneficiaries in a collective mission to supercharge the state’s economy through world-class hospitality.
The Chief Minister asserted that the government cannot win this battle alone. He emphasized that the heartbeat of tourism lies in the seamless collaboration between taxi drivers, hotel owners, and restaurateurs. His ultimate goal is for the name “Meghalaya” to be the very first thought that flashes in the minds of families worldwide when they plan a vacation.
Beyond luxury and infrastructure, Sangma reminded the crowd that the most enduring travel memories are forged through authentic human connections and the vibrant tapestry of local culture and traditions.
To turn this grand vision into reality, the government is currently fast-tracking a series of “game-changer” projects that are set to redefine the Meghalaya experience.
Highlights include the ambitious Shillong Ropeway, the thrilling Mawkdok Skywalk, a one-of-a-kind Rain Museum in Mawsynram, and the Living Root Bridge Museum. However, the biggest “thunderbolt” announcement of the day was the massive expansion of the Shillong Airport.
With the Government of India officially handing over the runway project, big jets are expected to land directly in Shillong within the next 15 months, creating a direct bridge between the “Abode of Clouds” and the rest of the world.
