SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, met with Governor C.H. Vijayashankar at Lok Bhavan today to provide a detailed briefing on the prevailing law and order situation in the Garo Hills region.
The meeting comes in the wake of recent unrest that has gripped the region over the past two weeks. The Chief Minister, who has been personally camping in Garo Hills to monitor the situation on the ground, stated that the visit was necessary to provide a formal update following previous telephonic conversations with the Governor.
The Chief Minister informed the Governor that the situation has significantly improved. In a major sign of returning normalcy, internet services have been restored across the affected areas.
CM Sangma emphasized his direct involvement, noting, “I have been stationed in Garo Hills for the last two weeks to oversee operations. Today, the Deputy CM and I provided a comprehensive report to the Governor, who now has a clearer understanding of the complexities involved.”
When questioned about recent arrests and detentions, the Chief Minister maintained that these are procedural matters handled by the Police Department. He clarified that actions are being taken by District SPs based on evidence and legal merit.
While the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that large-scale violence and disturbances have subsided, he issued a note of caution regarding isolated “sporadic incidents” that continue to occur in certain pockets.
The state government remains on high alert and is closely monitoring these developments to ensure that total peace is permanently restored to the region.
“The scale of violence has drastically come down. However, we remain vigilant as there are still minor, stray incidents being reported. Our priority is to ensure the complete safety of all citizens,” Sangma added.
