SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has called for a permanent solution to the 54-year-old Assam-Meghalaya boundary dispute, stressing the importance of peace and normalcy along the sensitive inter-state border.
Addressing reporters, Sangma noted that while some disputed areas have been resolved, ongoing coordination between the two states is key to preventing tensions from escalating.
Sangma acknowledged the complexity and long-standing nature of the issue, highlighting the need for local-level engagement to address differences and avoid flare-ups.

On demands raised by eight UDP MLAs—including the inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule and resumption of coal mining—Sangma said the focus should be on achieving results rather than political credit.
He emphasized that the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule would benefit all of Meghalaya, and welcomed any initiative—regardless of party or group—that advances this cause.
“If the efforts of the eight MLAs lead to concrete gains, it should be seen as a victory for the people of Meghalaya,” he stated.
