SHILLONG: The bodies of a young man and a woman were recovered at Lumsohphoh along the Shillong–Jowai road on Sunday Morning, with police suspecting a possible case of suicide.
Superintendent of Police East Khasi Hills District Vivek Syiem, while speaking to the media, informed that police received information about the incident at around 7:00 AM.
Following the information, a team from Laitumkhrah Police Station immediately rushed to the spot and found the bodies of the two individuals with a rope tied around their necks.
The area was immediately cordoned off, and a forensic team was called to conduct necessary examinations. The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Semanto Hajong and Pronome Hajong,from South West Khasi Hills District. Police have informed their respective families about the incident.
Syiem said that during the preliminary investigation, no injury marks were found on the bodies except around the neck area. The bodies were subsequently sent to NEIGRIHMS for post-mortem examination, and the report is awaited. A case of Unnatural Death (UD) has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station.
According to the SP, both the deceased were working in the same area and were acquainted with each other. The woman was employed at a café, while the man worked at an electrical shop. They were reportedly staying at Lumsohphoh.
Police have collected CCTV footage from the area and are examining the recordings as part of the investigation.
The SP said that preliminary findings indicate that the duo may have taken their own lives; however, the exact reason behind the incident will be ascertained only after further investigation and receipt of the post-mortem report.
Police are also investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
The woman was reportedly seen leaving the shop at around 12:35 am, while the man left around midnight. After completion of the post-mortem examination, the bodies will be handed over to the families.
