Fact-Finding Panel Wraps First Phase of July 31 Hearings

The committee is working diligently despite upcoming holidays and is mindful of ongoing court proceedings related to the matter.

SHILLONG: The Fact Finding Committee, chaired by Home (Police) Commissioner and Secretary R.M. Kurbah, has concluded its initial round of hearings into the incidents that occurred during the public hearing on July 31.

Following a marathon session, Kurbah confirmed that the committee interacted with 15-16 delegations—including local dorbars, traditional institutions, Elakas, and pressure groups such as the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Jaintia Students Union (JSU)—who submitted written statements and feedback.

Kurbah emphasized that the committee’s mandate is to uncover the absolute truth about the July 31 events, and that all documents and representations are being thoroughly reviewed.

She cautioned that no immediate comments can be issued, as officials must cross-check public statements against official reports to ensure consistency and accuracy.

The committee is working diligently despite upcoming holidays and is mindful of ongoing court proceedings related to the matter.

Kurbah noted that if any gaps or ambiguities are found during the review, the committee will recall relevant groups for further discussions before submitting its final report to the government.
