Former South Tura MLA John Leslee K Sangma Re-joins Congress Ahead of GHADC Elections

The Congress remains the only political platform that continues to stand firmly for democracy and rights of indigenous tribes, John said.

SHILLONG: Former South Tura MLA John Leslee K Sangma officially re-joined the Congress on Tuesday, boosting the party’s preparations for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) 2026 elections.

Welcoming him back, MPCC President Vincent H. Pala said, “We are happy to welcome John Leslee K Sangma into the Congress family. His return sends a message to the BJP and NPP, whose divisive politics are affecting the Garo Hills region. His decision also shows that the Congress is regaining strength. His vision and his closeness to the people will further strengthen the party in Garo Hills.”

John Leslee, who previously joined the United Democratic Party (UDP), is regarded as a respected public representative known for advocating the rights and aspirations of the Garo Hills people.

He said his decision to return followed extensive consultations with elders, supporters, and various community groups. According to him, the Congress remains the only political platform that continues to stand firmly for democracy and the rights of indigenous tribes.

Speaking with MPCC leaders, John Leslee expressed deep concern over the mounting hardships in Garo Hills, particularly the bleak future faced by the youth — marked by unemployment, growing hopelessness, and shrinking opportunities for growth and self-improvement.
