SHILLONG: In a powerful statement against drug abuse and aimlessness among young people, three youths from Meghalaya today completed a gruelling 290-kilometre walk from Tura to Shillong to promote a drug-free and purpose-driven lifestyle.
The initiative, titled “Walking with Purpose,” was undertaken by Welkin Stone Shadap, Kyrsoijingtip Ryntathiang, and Bashaiphar Shylla, representing different districts of the state. The journey began on January 26 and concluded in Shillong on February 3, with the trio completing the walk in just seven days—three days ahead of their original schedule.
Covering an average of 35 to 50 kilometres daily, the youths began walking before sunrise and spent nearly 12 hours on foot each day, carrying backpacks weighing approximately 15 kilograms. Despite the physical and mental strain, the team reported no major safety concerns and said they were met with encouragement and support from communities along the route.
Addressing reporters after completing the walk, the participants said the initiative was a conscious stand against rising drug abuse and the growing lack of direction among today’s youth.
“This walk is our response to the challenges facing young people. We want to show that discipline, focus, and the right friendships can transform lives,” said Shadap.
They added that Walking with Purpose has now evolved into a broader collective movement aimed at inspiring youth to choose purpose over distraction and adopt healthier, more productive lifestyles.
Looking ahead, the group plans to organise similar awareness activities, including cycling expeditions and mountain-climbing challenges, to further promote physical fitness, mental resilience, and positive living among young people.
The team also expressed gratitude to various government departments, educational institutions, and local supporters for their encouragement, describing the initiative as a meaningful step toward building a healthier, more responsible society in Meghalaya.
