SHILLONG: In a major step toward easing urban congestion and upgrading public infrastructure, the Government of Meghalaya has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose event ground at Mawkhanu in New Shillong.

Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed the State Assembly today that the project is part of a broader strategy to shift large public gatherings away from Shillong’s congested city centre to the rapidly developing Knowledge City area.

Responding to a resolution moved by North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, the Minister said the proposed facility will cover 17 acres and be developed at an estimated cost of ₹101 crore. Once completed, it will have the capacity to host 60,000 to 70,000 people at a time, making it one of the largest event venues in the region.

Minister Dhar highlighted that the mega project has been designed to meet modern infrastructure standards. The facility will include expansive parking zones, dedicated food courts, professional green rooms and contemporary amenities and landscaped spaces.

He noted that constructing such large-scale infrastructure within Shillong city is no longer feasible due to space constraints and severe traffic congestion during major public events.

In addition to the New Shillong project, the government is also implementing several initiatives to upgrade and revitalise key public spaces in the state capital.

The iconic Wards Lake is being redeveloped into a vibrant community hub. The upgraded space will host seasonal markets to support local traders and promote the Grassroot Music Project for emerging artists, while continuing to serve as a major tourist attraction.

Work is underway on the “Meghalaya First Riverfront Project” along the Umkhrah River in Polo. The initiative aims to create pedestrian walkways, recreational zones, and beautified public spaces along the river corridor.

The Barik area is set to be converted into an open public plaza to ease traffic congestion and provide a safe, accessible breathing space for residents and visitors.

Upgrades at Phan Nonglait Park (formerly Lady Hydari Park) are focused on improving accessibility, safety, and usability, especially for children, women, and senior citizens.

Minister Dhar expressed appreciation to MLA Adelbert Nongrum for raising issues related to urban congestion and public infrastructure. He stated that these initiatives align with the government’s long-term vision of transforming Shillong into a cleaner, more organised, and people-friendly city.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing these projects on time to ensure better living standards and enhanced quality of life for the youth and residents of Meghalaya.
