Golflink Tensions Rise as Dorbar Shnong Locks Shillong Golf Course Entry Points

The Dorbar Shnong Golflink maintained that the locking of gates was necessary to safeguard community interests

SHILLONG: Tension escalated between the Dorbar Shnong Golflink and the Shillong Golf Course management, operated by the Shillong Club, after local authorities today locked multiple entry points and public access areas at Golflink.

The move comes in response to growing complaints from residents, particularly morning walkers, who alleged that entry fees were being charged for access to what they consider a public space. Locals have termed the charges unjust and a violation of community rights.

Acting on these concerns, the Dorbar Shnong Golflink, led by Rangbah Shnong Michael Hek, along with members of Seng Longkmie, Seng Samla, and other local leaders, shut down access points to the golf course in protest.

Speaking to the media, Hek asserted that the Shillong Club is merely a lessee of the land and not its owner, yet has been functioning beyond its mandate. He alleged that the club has been arbitrarily collecting fees from the public despite the area being designated for open access.

He further questioned whether the club holds a valid trading licence to impose such charges and revealed that the Dorbar Shnong had earlier sought dialogue through formal communication, which went unanswered.

Accusing the club of disregarding local norms and public rights, Hek warned of stronger action if the issue remains unresolved.

The Dorbar Shnong Golflink maintained that the locking of gates was necessary to safeguard community interests and reiterated that public spaces must remain freely accessible without any form of entry fee.
