SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Tourism Department has demanded that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) immediately remove locks and seals placed on the Lower Terminal Point of the Shillong Peak Ropeway Project at Madan Laban.
Commissioner and Secretary R.M. Kurbah, IAS, stated that the department has written to KHADC’s Executive Committee Secretary, warning that the State Government will take legal action if the matter is not resolved.
The KHADC Enforcement Wing sealed the project site and office, evicted project staff, and seized materials on October 27, following a pending trading licence application by the executing agency, M/s KEC-TCL (JV).
The Tourism Department maintained that the ropeway is a public infrastructure project under the Meghalaya Ropeway Act, 2022, and the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority (MRDA) is the nodal agency.
The department has demanded the release of all seized materials, withdrawal of the seizure action, and written assurance that no further regulatory action will be taken against the State, MRDA, or the executing agency.
Kurbah said the government will act to reopen the site if KHADC fails to comply.
