SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, on Monday, said the Them Iewmawlong issue remains unresolved due to “lack of political will”, adding that this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the State Government and is not an issue of the Central Government.
On the nomenclature, Nongrum said he preferred to refer to the area as Them Iewmawlong and did not want it to be referred to as “Them Metor”, “Harijan Colony” or by other names. He said the area has historically been known as quarters for government employees from different departments.
The MLA also said that he had made his position clear from the beginning and that he would not expect votes and would not compromise his position for political considerations or at the cost of future generations, adding that he would continue to watch the developments on the matter.
On the request from the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) for him to return to the party, Nongrum said he had nothing further to say on the matter. He recalled that he had previously been associated with KHNAM but later left the party for various reasons and joined another political party.
He added that those extending invitations or making offers would be in a better position to explain their reasons, as the reasons were best known to them.
