SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has called for top police and administrative officials to be held criminally accountable for ongoing illegal extortion targeting commercial vehicles on highways in East Khasi Hills.
KSU General Secretary Rueben A. Najiar argued that just as student leaders are swiftly arrested under organizational responsibility during protests, police commanders should face the same standard when their subordinates are caught engaging in organized illegal activity.
The demand follows recent revelations of widespread extortion near Mawkhanu and Thangshalai, with the KSU asserting that such operations by constable-level personnel are only possible with directives or sanction from higher authorities.

The union directly implicated East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem and called for accountability at the highest level, noting previous complaints from June 2026 remain unaddressed.
Rejecting routine disciplinary actions like transfers or suspensions, the KSU demanded immediate criminal arrests and prosecution of implicated officers.
The union also called for the removal of both the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police before any independent inquiry, warning of intensified public agitation if the government fails to act.
