Meghalaya Pushes for Strategic Status to Ranikor–Ratacherra Road in Meeting with Rajnath Singh

The CM stated that the Defence Minister responded positively to the proposal and assured that the matter would receive due consideration.

SHILLONG: Following the International Yoga Day programme in Shillong, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma held a brief yet significant meeting with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, focusing on critical infrastructure and defence land-related issues in the state.

During the discussion, the Chief Minister highlighted that several key infrastructure projects in and around Shillong require close coordination and support from the armed forces. Among the major initiatives taken up were the proposed expansion of Shillong Airport and the construction of a four-lane road connecting Shillong city to Barik Point. Sangma noted that the Ministry of Defence has extended its full support to both projects, paving the way for their smoother implementation.

A major highlight of the meeting was the proposal to declare the Ranikor–Ratacherra road, located along the India-Bangladesh border, as a “Strategic Road.” Emphasizing its importance, the Chief Minister pointed out that connectivity from Ranikor to Dalu has already been developed in phases, linking to National Highways 217 and 127B, and further extending connectivity via the Phulbari–Dhubri Bridge to Silchar. However, the crucial stretch between Ratacherra and Ranikor remains underdeveloped.

Sangma stressed that completing this missing link would not only boost civilian mobility and economic activities but also significantly strengthen national security infrastructure in the border region.

Expressing optimism following the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that the Defence Minister responded positively to the proposal and assured that the matter would receive due consideration. He further revealed that the issue had earlier been discussed with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who had also underscored the important role of the Ministry of Defence in advancing the project.

If approved and implemented, the proposed strategic road is expected to evolve into a vital defence and economic corridor, benefiting Meghalaya and enhancing connectivity across the Northeastern region of India.
