SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) observed the 11th death anniversary of its founder, Late Hopingstone Lyngdoh Nonglait, on Saturday, honoring his enduring contributions to Meghalaya’s political history.
The HSPDP Youth Wing CEC organized a symposium celebrating Lyngdoh’s legacy as a statesman and key figure in the Hill State Movement.
Dr. Jayanti Shadap, Associate Professor at St Edmund’s College, addressed young participants, highlighting Lyngdoh’s perseverance, courage, and commitment to the aspirations of the hill people.
She recalled his pivotal role in the Hill State Movement, his opposition to the Assam Official Language Bill of 1960, and his unwavering demand for full statehood.

Dr. Shadap also noted Lyngdoh’s efforts to expand educational opportunities in rural areas and his early advocacy against uranium mining, raising environmental and indigenous rights issues both nationally and internationally.
She emphasized his belief in unity and cooperation among Meghalaya’s communities.
Party leaders, including HSPDP President K.P. Pangniang, General Secretary P. Ryntathiang, MLA and State Cabinet Minister Methodius Dkhar, and students attended the commemorative event, which remembered Lyngdoh as both a founder and an influential statesman in Meghalaya’s history.
