HYC President Demands Speedy Justice in Mukroh Firing Case

Will the residents of the border areas continue to lose their lives at the hands of Assam's personnel? HYC asked.

HYC President & COMSO Chairman, Roy Kupar SYnrem

SHILLONG: The President of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Roy Kupar Synrem, has issued a strong appeal to the State Government to ensure prompt and serious action against the perpetrators responsible for the deaths of five residents of Mukroh village.

Synrem highlighted that three full years have passed since the tragic incident in Mukroh, where five villagers were killed. The HYC has consistently demanded that the Meghalaya Government take stringent action against the Assam Forest Department personnel who allegedly resorted to indiscriminate firing on the villagers.

”Since that time, the Governments of Assam and Meghalaya have taken various decisions and formed their own Commissions of Inquiry. However, these Commissions have been ineffective, as the investigation has not reached any conclusion to date,” he stated.

He recalled the decision by both Chief Ministers to refer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an independent probe to ensure that the guilty parties are punished.

“However,” he added, “on the third anniversary of the incident on November 22, 2025, according to the Mukroh Dorbar Shnong (Village Council), the CBI investigation has also failed to make any progress. They have not taken serious action, and no legal provisions have been invoked against the individuals responsible for taking the lives of the public.”

The HYC strongly condemned the Meghalaya Government and urged that, having entrusted the case to the CBI for investigation, the government must follow up diligently to ensure the investigation is completed fairly and that the culprits are punished according to the law.

Synrem lamented that despite the passage of three years, the community cannot forget the incident, which remains a deep wound, simply because the residents sought to defend their border. He asserted that these incidents continue to happen because the State has failed to resolve the inter-state boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

The HYC President concluded with a challenging question: Will the residents of the border areas continue to lose their lives at the hands of Assam’s personnel, and will they continue to wait for such tragic incidents to recur?
