SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and PWD (Roads) Minister Prestone Tynsong has defended the state’s rural infrastructure efforts following public outrage over the death of a critically ill infant in Domkyrka village, West Khasi Hills.
The tragedy, which occurred on October 1 after the infant died during a three-hour trek to reach an emergency vehicle due to the lack of motorable roads, sparked widespread criticism.
Tynsong clarified that Domkyrka has never had a road since Meghalaya attained statehood, rather than suffering from neglected infrastructure.
He announced that the government has sanctioned a ₹25 crore road project to connect Domkyrka and 8–9 other remote villages, with construction set to begin soon.

Responding to criticism from Voice of the People Party (VPP) chief Bah Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit and others, Tynsong emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps, noting that comprehensive connectivity initiatives have been underway since 2013.
While acknowledging more work remains, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring every corner of the state is accessible by road.
