Jaintia Truckers Demand Local Priority in Trade Licences

The group has appealed to authorities to address their grievances, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard opportunities.

SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Truck Owners and Drivers Welfare Association has voiced concern over the rising number of trading licences issued by the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), alleging that licences are being granted to new transporters—including those from outside the state—despite assurances that local interests would be prioritized.

Association president Wanshuwa Nongtdu, speaking at the Shillong Press Club, highlighted the employment crisis facing local truck owners and drivers, especially after the closure of coal mining.

He revealed that the number of trading licences issued by the JHADC increased from 36 to 53 in less than six months, despite earlier appeals to temporarily halt new licences for outsiders.

Nongtdu said the association had previously met the JHADC’s Trade Department and was assured of further discussions, but received no follow-up.

He expressed disappointment that the council’s assurances had not translated into action to protect local livelihoods.

The association also noted that, despite a joint inspection with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for a proposed truck lay-by, the facility has yet to materialize.

Such a lay-by would provide designated parking for trucks and reduce road disruptions.

The group has appealed to authorities to address their grievances, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard opportunities for local truck operators.
