GUWAHATI: Protesters at Jorabat have temporarily suspended their agitation following high-level talks between Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora.
The meeting resulted in an agreement to restore peace and resume normal movement across the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Minister Atul Bora, joined by Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, met with protesting drivers and civil society groups, informing them that the Meghalaya government has agreed to compensate those affected by vehicle damage and injury.
Officials also confirmed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to pursue legal action against those responsible for the violence.
The protesters, satisfied with these assurances, have called off their agitation for now but warned that demonstrations will resume if the Meghalaya government fails to deliver on its commitments regarding compensation and security.
